What is Literacy?

Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, compute and use printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or her knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the wider society. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Victoria Literacy Task Group

The Task Group works with a Literacy Outreach Coordinator (Jan Dupuis) to implement the goals in the community literacy plan. The group is made up of several organizations that either directly or indirectly provide programs and services to people who want to increase their literacy skills. Members include: Victoria Literacy Connection (formerly Literacy Victoria and READ Society), Greater Victoria Public Library, The Learning Curve (formerly Learning Disabilities Assocation), Camosun College, School District 61, Here! magazine, Child Care Resources & Referral, Story Studio, Success by Six, Island Community Mental Health, Together Against Poverty Society. The Task Group is open to new members.

Greater Victoria Community Literacy Initiative

In 2015 a group of community-based literacy support organizations in Greater Victoria came together to explore how they and others might work together better to improve literacy support to literacy learners and their advocates. We are now at the mid-point in this explorative journey having completed a Challenge Dialogue™ with a broad range of stakeholders. The challenge identified was: “To design a literacy support system for Greater Victoria that is relevant, sustainable and effective for individuals and the communities in which they live, learn, work and play.”
